INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA (December 1, 2020) – It has been unfortunately hard for artists everywhere recently, but many have taken the unpaid sabbatical from live shows as a time to really dig into creation. This has given the world tons of new music, but one of the albums that stands out to me most is Wildernest, a solo album released in May by Nick Vote of the amazing Jomberfox.
The very first track of Wildernest, “Lean In”, delivers as promised by immediately making the listener lean in closer to hear the beginning of this glorious album. “She Cleans the House” sweeps in next with noises reminiscent of war-time anxiety, but somehow the panic is immediately soothed by Vote’s hauntingly reassuring voice. The upbeat tempo, however, still carries a sense of urgency that sends you quickly sailing into song 3.
“Albuquerque” takes over the speakers next like a logical conversation that has come into the room to bring you a little bit back to the ground… the ground in Albuquerque.
Track four truly is a “Strange Surprise” as it comes in cradling you like an old lullaby that you can feel, but can’t quite place. The melody gently rocks the aural cradle like a breeze lightly blows on a relaxing spring day. Just as the tranquility of “Strange Surprise” has you a little almost too relaxed “Good Enough” comes in like a good cup of coffee first thing in the morning to ease you right back up.
Finally, “All I Need” comes on just like a beautiful beginning to a fairytale that you’re just not quite ready to reach the happy ending to yet. The song graciously lingers with a slow tempo, however, and at least somewhat satiates the longing that has already started to come from knowing you’re nearing the end. The 6 tracks to Nick Vote’s Wildernest go by all too fast, but thankfully there’s a Wildernest Pt. 11, and with any luck I’ll get another review done before the LSD wears off.
