Gypsy Road Leads to Vogue for Night Songs With Tom Keifer

Article & photos by Melodie Yvonne Ramey

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 31, 2018) – The line stretched forever passed The Vogue Theatre in Broad Ripple filled with fans eager to see Tom Keifer, yet another legend brought to town by the infamous venue along with Q95 & Newco Metals, Inc. The crowd would not be disappointed, and their pleasing experience began as usual with the kind and helpful staff at the doors. The house filled quickly, and the first band of the night took the stage in front of a voracious audience ready to drink in every note.

MotorChief began the night with a savage set that met every bit of the crowd’s brutal expectations. They didn’t suffer the fate of many openers, just disregarded as a mediocre way to pass the time. They commanded the time. By the end of their set the crowd’s adrenaline was so thick it could be cut with a knife.

Sacred Leather came on next with a song list that had surely been sanctified by the Gods of Metal. They spit their songs as powerfully and precisely as a dragon spitting fire which heated up the room like an oven on broil. Their searing set lit the audience on fire with a musical furry that could only be satiated by the iconic headliner himself.

Finally, the man of the night emerged on to The Vogue’s stage with a fierceness that emanated in every step he took. Tom Keifer had arrived, and suddenly the casual den from the audience turned into something more akin to a barbaric yawp greeting the illustrious musician with a reception fit for a king. It was easy to tell that the beautiful artists coming on to the scene closely behind him had his back as well in a way that was more than just bandmates. The musicians huddled together quickly in the middle of the stage like warriors preparing for battle with Keifer at the helm giving the audience just a brief taste of the amazing events to come.

Oftentimes when a legend of Keifer’s caliber comes to town devotees will only appear begging for classic material. It’s obvious, however, that Tom has continued to redefine himself successfully throughout the years creating a fanbase that ached for nostalgia as well as his newer works. The crowd came unglued for Keifer’s incredible performance of “The Way Life Goes” in every bit the same way that they went crazy for “Shake Me“, and the attention was well deserved. It was easy to see that every musician on stage was putting their heart and soul into every move they made, and that amazing passion could be felt from the font of the room all the way to the back.

Keifer more than successfully executed a legion of melodies from his repertoire with the skills and style of a real master. He even gave it his all for a helluva show despite having an injured ankle proving that if there can be only one it’s actually possible that someday Keith Richards might be overthrown. Fortunately, though, there is plenty of room in this world for immortal musicians aplenty, and Indianapolis is blessed to have the wonderous Vogue Theatre housing the legends any chance they get for a long time to come. With any luck that ole gypsy road will lead Tom Keifer and his band back to Indiana again soon making an Indy tour stop a new Midwest tradition for many more Hoosier generations to come.
